I recently got the opportunity to try out ARpedia, an educational tool that makes books come alive while encouraging STEM learning. AR stands for augmented reality. ARpedia is designed for kids 4-11 years old, and there are three different sets of books - Into the Curiosity Q, Science, and Community. I got to try out Science, which is recommended for older students due to its more detailed texts and variety of science experiments across subjects like Physics and Biology!

Setting up ARpedia is easy. First, download the ARpedia app on your tablet. Next, place your tablet on SPOTTY, an adorable giraffe tablet stand with camera attached, and plug the tablet into SPOTTY using a cable. Finally, put the book you want to read in front of SPOTTY. SPOTTY will read the book cover and start your learning adventure!

As you read the book in front of Spotty, a variety of AR activities appear on the screen. Some pages will direct you to put the markers under the camera. These are pieces of cardstock that trigger more activities and information on the screen. All of the activities keep students’ attention and make learning more interesting.

With ARpedia, STEM topics become super hands-on and engaging. Kids can see a realistic dinosaur brought to life, listen to a frog’s cry, or do an x-ray of an eagle! ARpedia is truly a virtual science lab brought directly into the home. It’s a great tool for home schooling or online tutoring and would make an awesome educational gift for a little learner in your life.

The back of each book has an envelope for easy and convenient storage of the paper markers/pieces. The kits also come with Lab Notebooks, which give learners a place to record their observations. ARpedia is full of exciting opportunities for exploration. Check it out!
