8 Diverse Children's Picture Books About Love: An Inclusive February Collection

February’s theme of the month is love. I know what you’re thinking. Cliche. Right? I don’t think it has to be! While I definitely enjoy me some Tiny T. Rex and the Impossible Hug and Zombie in Love, I believe these titles are where our February book collections should begin, not end.

Valentine’s Day and the weeks surrounding it have the incredible potential to be an inclusive celebration of love in ALL its forms. They don’t need to be all Cupid, candy hearts, and doilies - although these are certainly enjoyable sprinkled in here and there.

These read aloud Valentine's Day books are not only Valentine's day picture books, but also books on diversity and inclusion for kids. Even more notable than it being the month of Valentine’s Day, February is Black History Month. This is an important time to honor and celebrate Black stories. I chose books featuring joyful Black characters, such as in The Bear’s Garden and From Archie to Zack. I also chose The Case For Loving, which the story of the fight for interracial marriage in the United States.
